Four Mile Beach: Port Douglas's Calm Tropical Stretch
Worth setting expectations straight: Four Mile Beach isn't really a swell-chasing surf spot. The Great Barrier Reef sits far enough offshore here to absorb most incoming ocean swell before it reaches the sand, which is exactly what makes this stretch — running from Island Point in the north down to the Mowbray River mouth — such a calm, easy stretch of tropical coastline instead.
That calm water makes it a genuinely relaxing place to swim, walk or simply watch, with a lifeguard-patrolled swimming enclosure and a stinger net installed each year during jellyfish season (roughly November to May). It's a five-minute walk from central Port Douglas, and this stream is a handy way to check on conditions, crowd levels, or whether the stinger net is currently in the water, before you head down.
