Maroubra: Sydney's Powerful South-Side Break
Locals just call it "The Bra." Maroubra sits further south than Sydney's more postcard-famous beaches, and its open, unbroken exposure to the Tasman Sea tends to give it a heavier, more powerful beach break than the harbour-sheltered spots to the north — a reputation that's shaped a strong, fiercely loyal local surf culture over the decades, including the surf gang subculture that put the suburb in national headlines in the 2000s.
The wave itself is a classic sandbank beach break, best towards the southern end near Fisherman's Hill, and it holds size well when smaller Sydney beaches are going flat.
